There can hardly be a better located hotel in Zermatt as it is situated right next to the Sunnegga funicular and about five minutes’ walk from the village centre or the Gornergrat railway. It has a magnificent, slightly elevated position and is reached by a lift up through the hillside that brings you right to the reception desk. The ski bus to the Kleine Matterhorn cable cars stops virtually in front of the hotel. It's usually possible to ski back to the hotel which makes it almost unique in Zermatt.

There is extensive use of pine in the decor to create the ambience of an Alpine hotel, a beautifully appointed rustic style dining room as well as a fine à la carte restaurant. The cuisine is excellent and dinner is with 5 courses with a choice of main course whilst once a week there's a gala dinner with a 6 course menu. The lounge has an open log fire and along with the bar there's usually a lively ambience here in the evenings. Other facilities include sauna, jacuzzi, exercise room and a sun terrace with a fantastic view over the roofs of Zermatt to the Matterhorn. Guests have access to the swimming pool at a nearby hotel.

We have known the Schönegg since it was first opened and have always admired the skill and flare with which Konrad and Marie-José Metry run the hotel, ably assisted by their friendly and efficient staff. Ski to door.
